Ben Shelton secured his place in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open after mounting an impressive comeback against Casper Ruud, earning a meeting with defending champion Jannik Sinner. The American overcame the Norwegian 3–6, 6–4, 6–3, 6–4, while Sinner had earlier advanced with a straight-sets victory over fellow Italian Luciano Darderi.

Seeded eighth, Shelton grew into the match after a difficult start, gradually imposing his physicality and aggressive baseline play. Ruud, known for his consistency and defensive solidity, controlled the opening set, but was unable to maintain that level as the contest progressed. The match lasted two hours and 38 minutes and marked Shelton’s second win over Ruud in their four career encounters, their first meeting since Acapulco in 2024.
The victory highlights Shelton’s steady rise among the elite of men’s tennis. Over the past seasons, the 22-year-old has established himself as a regular presence at the later stages of major tournaments and as one of the few players capable of challenging the current dominance of Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz on occasion.
This is Shelton’s third quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open in just four participations, placing him among a select group of American players to reach the last eight in Melbourne three or more times. He now aims to return to the semifinals, a stage he reached last year before being eliminated by Sinner.
Overall, this marks Shelton’s fifth Grand Slam quarterfinal. At just over 22 years of age, he recently became the youngest American to reach the Australian Open semifinals since Andy Roddick’s run in 2003, and he has also made a semifinal appearance at the US Open in 2023, where Novak Djokovic ended his campaign.
For Ruud, the defeat was particularly disappointing, as he was seeking his first quarterfinal appearance in Melbourne. Despite being a three-time Grand Slam finalist, the Norwegian has yet to translate that success to the Australian Open. He now leaves the tournament with personal reasons to look ahead, as he prepares to return home to Oslo to be with his family.
Looking ahead, the historical record strongly favors Sinner in the upcoming quarterfinal. Shelton has managed only one victory in nine matches against the Italian, achieved at the Shanghai Masters in 2023. Since then, Sinner has dominated their rivalry, including a straight-sets win over Shelton in Melbourne last year. Nevertheless, Shelton will enter the match hoping to challenge the reigning champion and alter the balance of their recent encounters.
